SPOILERS AHEAD (I need to let out my feelings. I need to.)
The story is about Jung Han Kyung who moves from a small town to the big city, Seoul. She moves because her father died and her mom is living in Seoul with a new husband (not exactly new, they already have a son and daughter). In Seoul, she discovers that the guy she liked (who moved to Seoul) got together with another friend of hers who moved to Seoul a few years before her. She is devastated BUT don't worry she has Ban Hae Won, the school's leader/fighter and resident hottie, and Jung Tae Sung , a rival school's leader/fighter and also a resident hottie. Dream come true, no ? Alas, this story is not your typical cliched happy ending teenage rom com, THIS is your typical cliched depressing teenage rom com.Generally, I don't succumb to depressing stories which almost always takes a turn for the worst every time it gets a chance to, but I can't help myself. Well, first off, there's the Kang Dong Won factor (more on him later) and also there was no spoilers everywhere I looked. I didn't really know what to expect of the story going in , all I knew was that it's a pretty ugh-tastic ending. And so, I started my 'A Wolf's Temptation' journey ..
DARN YOU TERMINAL ILLNESSES AND FATE ! Why must it end so heart-breakingly perfect. There I said it. I have never liked a sad ending before but this has to take the cake for Best Make-Me-Feel-Depressed Endings ever. Here's some of my favourite arches :
1. All those courtship.
First half of the movie, everything is quite dandy and teenage-y enough to make me ignore the fact that the ending would make me want to kill myself. If I was Han Kyung, I wouldn't know which boy to choose ! On paper, she might seem like a playa, but Lee Chung Ah plays Jung Han Kyung very well and relatable. Both boys have their own qualities.
I love seeing Hae Won trying to woo Han Kyung with his usual tricks in a brash style, but it doesn't work because Han Kyung is a fiesty lady who will stick to what she believes in. Through out the courtship between these two, Hae Won has managed to shed his tough exterior just for Han Kyung and also the people around him.
Tae Sung on the other hand, is just a ball of cuteness. He brings his noona pizza during school hours, he does aegyo, he plays with the foam when they're doing dishes. CUTE CUTE CUTE. I could totally see myself with a guy like him. Or Hae Won. But Tae Sung's really nice too. SEE THE DILEMMA.
2. Forbidden love vs. Fate hates them
SPOILER : We find out that Tae Sung is the step-brother of Han Kyung by some twist of fate. Tae Sung knew from the moment they met. He fell in love when they were little and carried on his feelings until now.
"Absence makes the heart grow fonder"
Which is totally true. He took the chance to steal Han Kyung's heart before she finds out he's her stepbrother (He knew she's going to find out eventually right ..?) But she found out anyways and everyones' feelings are conflicted.
The scene where he confessed his love for her and cursed the heavens a thousand times for making her his sister made me cry buckets. Unrequited/Forbidden love is Just. So. Sad. How can you not cry ?
From the moment he started his monologue at the airport, my tears were streaming down consistently. Tae Sung said hopefully in the next life he would be reunited with Han Kyung. He will not mind if in the next life Han Kyung is really, really ugly as long as she's not his sister. You may laugh when you were reading that, but I assure you, if you watched the scene, your room will be flooded by your tears.
Every scene after that just breaks my heart. He did a video for Han Kyung in which he introduced his blind girlfriend. You can tell he didn't actually love her but UGH ok. Han Kyung watched it about 50 times already according to Hae Won.Then she received a call. It was Tae Sung. Even Hae Won wanted to speak to Tae Sung and you can tell he also missed having a rival. BROMANCE CUTENESS. But Tae Sung said he has to go and goes back to his hospital room.
He has a terminal illness (something wrong with his heart) and had to go through surgery. He didn't survive it. NOOOOOO He gave his eyes to the girlfriend. Han Kyung and gang knew about his death only when the girlfriend went to see them and broke the horrible news. CRIED BUCKETS I TELL YOU.
I guess I didn't really feel like Tae SUng has died because at the end, Tae Sung did a vlog addressed to Han Kyung and it was all cheery. Also, during the credits, they showed clips of Tae Sung, Hae Won, and Han Kyung playing with the snow happily.
SIGH. My heart goes out to Tae Sung, really. Why does fate need to be so cruel ?! WHY ?!
Afterthoughts :
This is the first Korean movie that I felt as if the story line wasn't rushed in any way and it was ended in a believable way. Well, as believable as it can be with these fate/terminal illnesses/accidents movies. It didn't throw us a loop nor did it add any unnecessary parts.
I haven't been on the K-Pop scene for that long so I knew Moon Joo Won (Baker Kim Tak Gu, Bridal Mask) first before Kang Dong Won. But since I have known Kang Dong Won (which is just basically, a day), I love him more. Okay, no, I love them equally. They're both very appealing; physically as well as personality wise.
Kang Dong Won is a mechanical engineer who graduated from Han Yang University. He also has an IQ of 137. So .. maybe Kang Dong Won is better ? NOOOOO. I can't decide.

ReplyDeleteYou know the last four picture, the 2nd and 3rd is not Kang Dong Won.. IT'S JOO WON...
ReplyDeleteI think that's why she said " and you are telling me they did not come from the same womb?! Utter nonsense." Because they look alike
DeleteI cried a lot throughout the whole movie.I could not see Tae Sung in such pain.He smiles a lot to hide his pain. That seems heartbreaking.I can't bear such pain.Hae Won is cute.He cares for Han Kyung a lot.The cutest scene was when Hae Won was tying her shoe laces.
ReplyDeleteHe is her half-brother not step-brother. Her dad had an affair with his mom. That is why it is forbidden love.
